Art exhibition of tsunami child victims successful

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Sri Lanka is the first tsunami affected country that organised an event to bring solace and calm to the minds of tsunami child victims.

It is easy to re-build the damaged buildings and other infrastructure facilities in a short time but very difficult to repair the damage caused to young minds, Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Vijitha Herath said.

Addressing the gathering after awarding certificates to participants of the art exhibition organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs for tsunami victims in Colombo and suburbs.

The awards presentation was held at the John De Silva Memorial Theatre yesterday. Minister Herath said that a huge response has been received from foreign and local donors for the children's art exhibition and that the demand for such paintings was very high.

The paintings speak a thousand words that cannot be described.

The main intention of this exhibition was to afford mental strength to the affected children and sooth their minds. According to the thousands of comments made in the visitors' book by both foreign and local invitees they are eager to help these children, he added.

Around 800 paintings of tsunami victimised children were on the display.
