Austrian Airlines carry tsunami victims free Austrian Airlines, the national carrier of Austria carried more than 600 passengers from Colombo to Vienna free from December 27 after the tsunami struck Sri Lanka. While Austrian has thrice a week schedule services from Colombo to Vienna it operated an additional A 340 relief flight on December 30 to carry tsumani victims free. This was done in collaboration with the government of Austria. Austrian Airlines was one of the first and few airlines that offered a very liberal policy of accepting European union passengers of other airlines without any endorsement on their tickets. Priority was given to passengers holding Austrian airlines tickets and the nationals of Austria but eventually accepted all other passengers who were holding other airline tickets. This arrangement made it easy for the traumatised and injured passengers to get on board without any difficulty. Staff from the ticketing office in Colombo worked together with the airport staff to provide maximum assistance to all departing passengers. The arrangements of the flights and the setting up of the action plan was the direct result of the intervention of Jimmy Sng, The Regional head of Austrian Airlines based in Bangkok together with Browns Tours Ltd, the general sales Agent in Sri Lanka. |
