Centre to help SMEs gain more EU access

by Sudarshana Perera

The SAS European Industrial Service of France in partnership with .Delta Technology (Pvt) Ltd will set up an European Business Facilitation Centre in Sri Lanka soon. The institution "Maison De France-Europe (MDF-E)" is focused to assist SMEs in Sri Lanka to find business partners, facilitate trade negotiations and to provide business centre/secretarial services facilities.

The agreement was signed recently by Ruvan de Alwis, President of SAS European Industrial Service and Rohan Abayawardena, Managing Director of Delta Technology (Pvt) Ltd.

The joint venture is a result the EU -Sri Lanka Partenariat held last June in Sri Lanka. Ruvan de Alwis, President of SAS European Industrial Service told the Daily News that in spite of the Tsunami disaster they will set up the centre in March and added it will help Sri Lankan SMEs to get more trade access to European Union countries.

"We will also provide investor related information for SMEs in both countries and we are ready to play a facilitator role to bring in more European investments to Sri Lanka and to find a potential market place for our products and services overseas", de Alwis said.

Rohan Abayawardena, Managing Director of Delta Technology (Pvt) Ltd said that the new concept will provide more opportunities to market Sri Lanka in European countries and they were geared to help SMEs to find more business vistas allowing more room for technology and knowledge transfer.

The EU-Sri Lanka Partenariat 2004, a two-day business matchmaking event for Sri Lankan and European Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) was the largest one-to-one business-matching held in Sri Lanka.

Over 1,500 face-to-face business meetings were conducted.

The EU-Sri Lanka Partenariat 2004 was a joint venture of the European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (ECCSL) and the European Commission (Asia Invest Program).
