It will also consist of representatives of the Ministry of Public Security and Law and Order, the Ministry of foreign Affairs ,Sri Lanka Port Authority, Sri Lanka Navy and the Customs. This committee will function under the supervision of Deputy Ministers of Port and Aviation Dilan Perera and Dayashritha Tissera. It will be responsible for ensuring efficient container handling at the Colombo, Galle and Trincomalee harbours. "It is expected that a large number of foreign ships will call at these ports in the coming weeks with heavy equipment including machinery for the massive reconstruction work to commence soon in the tsunami affected areas. Several countries, voluntary organisations and agencies have been sending relief aid since the tsunami struck the island on December 26. This committee will also ensure the efficient release of these items from the Colombo Port to be distributed in the affected areas," a Ministry official said. The Ministry has decided to set up this committee following the success of a similar program to make efficient the handling of cargo at the Bandaranaike International Airport. The Ministry official said that regular meetings will be held chaired by the Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority to address practical problems in cargo handling. |
