Sudan peace deal 'could revive Uganda rebel talks'

KAMPALA, Monday (Reuters) A peace accord in southern Sudan to end Africa's longest running civil war could revive stalled talks over a separate 18-year-old insurgency in neighbouring Uganda, Ugandan and Sudanese officials said on Monday.

Negotiations between Uganda's government and the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) failed to reach a breakthrough after the elusive group called for more time to study a truce document both sides had hoped to sign on Dec. 31.

But officials say the Sudanese peace deal agreed on Sunday could revitalise moves to end the rebellion by the cult-like LRA, which has long used mountain hideouts in the lawless south of the vast country to launch raids into Uganda.
