NEW DELHI, Monday (Reuters) At least 40 passengers were feared dead in southern India on Monday after a bus fell into a canal, police said.

They said the accident occurred around 3 a.m. (2130 GMT) in Bijapur district of Karnataka state, about 530 km (330 miles) northwest of state capital Bangalore.

"It fell into a deep canal downstream of the Almatti dam," a police officer in Bangalore told Reuters by phone. "There were 40-50 passengers on the bus and three of them have survived. The rest are feared dead." He said rescue teams had reached the site and were looking for survivors.
