Students develop tsunami warning program SYDNEY, Monday (The Age) Two students at the University of Technology in Sydney have developed a tsunami warning program which runs on the desktop of a Windows PC or a Mac. One of the students, Marcus Schappi, said he and colleague Christian Kent, had been inspired to create the little program after reading a column Cringely had pointed out that a tsunami warning system could be built in a short time using data available on the internet. Schappi, who is in the final year of an engineering degree, said he and Kent had taken the idea and run with it. They have used the widget generator Konfabulator to generate the warning screen that sits on the desktop of a PC or Mac. The program gets its data from from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tsunami warning bulletin. It runs on Windows XP or 2000 and Mac OS X. |
