Tsunami leaves Tharanga in distress Sri Lanka youth opening batsman Upul Tharanga is struggling to get his career back on track after the Tsunamis disaster devastated his house in Ambalangoda last week. The dashing left hander who turns 20 next month is desperate to rebuild his career after tidal waves swept aside all his belongings and cricketing equipment. Tharanga however escaped last Sunday's horror as he decided to stay in Colombo at one of his friend's place after representing NCC in the Premier Plate championship match against Police SC at Maitland Place. Tharanga had a memorable game in his previous outing scoring 94 in the first innings and then followed with a knock of 75 in the second innings as NCC cruised to an easy first innings victory over Police SC. He also made a contribution of 89 in the game against Chilaw Marians SC. The former Dharmasoka MV and Singha SC cricketer Tharanga was also selected to tour Pakistan with the Sri Lanka under 19 team for a two test unofficial series and three limited over matches. The tour however was later postponed indefinitely. Upul Tharanga has represented the Sri Lanka under 15, 17, 19 and also the Sri Lanka 'A' team against a number of touring teams. Tharanga's house in Ambalangoda which is situated close to the sea was entirely destroyed. His parents together with his brother and sister survived the trauma and are currently residing with a relative of theirs. - (C.D.) |
