Welfare centre housing tsunami victims set on fire allegedly by LTTE The welfare centre in the Kudatane government school in Nagarkovil, Jaffna where more than 60 Tamil families affected by the Tsunami tragedy are housed was set on fire allegedly by LTTE men in the wee hours of yesterday, Army Headquarters said yesterday. The LTTE had allegedly set this welfare centre on fire following an incident in which the refugees disregarded the LTTE directives not to obtain relief assistance from the Sri Lanka Army, from whom they have received assistance for the past six days. The Sri Lanka Army has been providing them with basic facilities such as food and clothing regardless of resistance from the LTTE for the last five to six days. The LTTE resistance reached a peak on Saturday around 5 pm as the LTTE prohibited the entry of Army relief team to the Kudatane welfare centre. The LTTE has denied the entry of troops who were supplying food and other essential items for the displaced persons housed in different welfare centres in the Nagarkovil area, to this specific welfare centre. Troops which did not want to create any confusion in front of the victims moved onto the adjoining refugee centre with essential items they brought for distribution. Irate refugees at the location after realising the LTTE's vicious act, broke the LTTE barrier against Security Forces and ran after troops to get food and clothes from them. Another incident of this nature was reported around 7 pm on Saturday from the same location. As the welfare centre was set on fire the inmates have now been shifted to a nearby Church and been supplied with their basic needs by the Sri Lanka Army. |
