Special committee to coordinate assistance to North

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has instituted a Humanitarian Assistance Committee for Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullativu districts.

North and East Governor Tyronne Fernando will chair this committee.

The committee could request the support of all Government Institutions, the three services and the police.

The assistance of rescue teams from France, now based in Vavuniya may also be obtained by this committee, the Office of the President said yesterday.

The President has directed the Sri Lanka Peace Secretariat via the SLMM to seek LTTE agreement, for the Russian teams of medical personnel in the island to work in the Kilinochchi and Mullativu areas.

Sri Lankan, Indian and Russian helicopters are also on stand-by to provide humanitarian assistance to affected areas in the North.
