Special UN coordinator for tsunami affected countries

Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan appointed Margareta Wahlstrom as the Special Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance in tsunami affected countries.

She will be in-charge of overall coordination of humanitarian assistance in all the affected countries.

Ms. Wahlstrom was scheduled to be in Sri Lanka on January 01 to meet with the relevant government authorities and visit the affected areas.

She will be accompanied by Arjun Katoch from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva.

Chief Justice conducts magisterial inquiries

Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva PC visited tsunami hit areas in the South together with 30 Judicial Officers and conducted Magisterial inquiries into the deaths of several persons.

The Chief Justice directed police to issue death certificates to their close relatives without delay.

The Magisterial inquiries into the other deaths will be conducted by Acting Magistrates in the respective areas, the Chief Justice said.

Relief from Singapore

The Government of Singapore has committed to provide medical supplies and other emergency relief assistance worth of millions of Singapore dollars to the tsunami victims in the affected areas of Sri Lanka. Tamasek Holdings, a Singaporean conglomerate has donated medicines to the tune of Rs. 6.4 million.

In addition the High Commission, with the support of the generous Singapore public and Sri Lankan nationals in Singapore have dispatched 10 nos. of 20-feet containers containing rice, canned food, clothing, etc. to be distributed to the tsunami victims in the affected areas.

Further consignments of medical supplies worth S$ 75000 by Sri Lankan Airlines will be dispatched to the Ministry of Social Welfare. These are supplied by major hospitals in Singapore.

SLMA disaster fund

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has established a Tsunami Disaster Fund with the aim of providing tsunami disaster victims with essential medicines.

We appeal to the general public and other organizations who are willing to contribute to this fund to send their cheques written in favour of "Sri Lanka Medical Association" to No.6 Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 with a covering letter.

You may also send your contributions directly to A/C No. 0760002372 CU at Hatton National Bank, Cinnamon Gardens Branch and follow up with a letter to the above address.

Funds received will be channelled directly to hospitals in the affected areas.

The SLMA handed over Rs. 150,000 donated by the SPUR organization of New South Wales, Australia to the General Hospital, Matara for the purchase of essential drugs as an initial step in this project, states a SLMA press release.
