Gem and Jewellery Authority pledges disaster relief

National Gem and Jewellery Authority Chairman Asoka Jayawardena in a media release on behalf of its employees pledged all assistance, monetary or otherwise, to rehabilitate every thing shorter than the resurrection of lives lost in the tidal wave tragedy of December 26.

It stated that the employees have decided to donate the entire salary increase of Rs. 2500 for December, 2004 towards the Relief Fund in addition to the Chairman's own one month's pay.

As stated in the media release, the total sum of Rs. 50,000 collected from employees to conduct the religious ceremony to bestow merit on late Dr. N. M. Perera, who founded the State Gem Corporation, scheduled for December 29 will be utilized to construct a house for the victim who was worst affected by the loss of his house.

According to Asoka Jayawardena, collection of relief items has already been started by the Authority's Ratnapura Regional Office and steps have been taken to despatch relief teams under the senior executives to all affected districts in the island.

He further said that in addition to the Authority's relief activities, the staff has contributed their might to the Relief Programme initiated by Minister Rohitha Bogollagama under whom the Gem and Jewellery Authority operates.
