'Orphaned children should be adopted legally'

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Some children have lost their whole family due to the tsunami but no one can adopt them without informing about the child to the relevant authorities and going through the legal Courts procedure, a National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) spokesman said.

He said that a media channel has told the public that children who have lost both parents can be adopted but it is completely inaccurate.

A child can be adopted only through legal procedure. The NCPA requests the public to handover rescued children to the NCPA, District Secretaries, Divisional Secretaries, Probation and Child Care Department, Probation officers, or police without delay.

The NCPA collect information on children who have lost parents and guardians. If individuals or families keep orphan children in homes or any other place the public can inform the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), No. 330, Thalawathugoda Road, Madiwela, Pitakotte. The telephone numbers are 0112-779196, 011-3070327 and the fax number is 0112-778915.

The main objective of this is preventing blackmailing parents of missing children, prevent orphan children being subjected to exploitation, sexual abuse and to prevent them using as domestic servants.
