Seven looters arrested, crackdown begins

by Sarath Malalasekera

Police have commenced a crackdown on looters and other elements attempting to take advantage of the situation in the tsunami hit areas, Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne said.

DIG Wickremaratne, in charge of the Police Disaster Management Team Control Centre, said they had arrested six persons from the Dehiwela Police area and another from Ambalangoda who had pilfered items in disaster hit areas.

DIG Wickremaratne appealed to the public to be vigilant and inform the special unit of any attempts by miscreants to prey on the innocent victims.

The abandoned vehicles collected by the police yesterday were handed over to their owners after confirming their ownership, he said.

Five air conditioned containers to store bodies until they are claimed by the owners will be flown courtesy of some Foreign Missions.

DIG Wickremaratne had directed all Officers-in-Charge of police stations to remove damaged vehicles caught in the tidal waves to police station premises until they are claimed by the registered owners.

"Police believe that several unscrupulous persons were preparing forged documents to claim the abandoned vehicles," DIG Wickremaratne said. He ordered the OICs that if two persons claim the same vehicle, to promptly produce them before the Magistrate for an order.

According to information, around 43 vehicles are found stuck on trees in the Yala Sanctuary, DIG Wickremaratne added.

Any person who lost their motor cars and motor bicycles following Sunday's tidal waves could contact the police on 2433671 or 2421111 Ext-141.

DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne said he would be available to the public on 2441147 - 2421111 Ext-329 or 0722244088 for further information.
