Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse visited the Hambantota District yesterday on an observation tour to look into the relief activities and the needs of the people affected by the tsunami disaster. The Prime Minister visited Bandagiriya, Malay Colony Mosque, Bandagiriya Viharaya, Kaeliyapura and Siribopura and several other areas and made arrangements to fulfil the urgent needs of the affected people. A press release by the Prime Minister's Office said residents of Kaeliyapura 5th mile post area complained about the absence of the single public servant to look into their requirements and the Prime Minister directed officials accompanying him to look into the needs of the people in the area urgently. The Prime Minister assured the people that accelerated program had been launched to provide relief to the affected people in Hambantota by deploying the services of graduate trainees, grama niladharis, police officers and Samurdhi officers and that data about damage to property would be collected through the police. An international NGO named NICCO agreed to provide 2,000 tents for distribution among the displaced people. The Prime Minister said a team of Hollywood artistes had promised to provide housing facilities to displaced people in Hambantota. These will take the form of housing schemes consisting of flats. Minister Mrs. Sumedha G. Jayasena and John Seneviratne, Deputy Ministers Chamal Rajapakse, Jagath Pushpakumara, Mahinda Amaraweera and Bimal Ratnayake and Provincial Ministers V.K. Indika and U.D. Ariyatilleke accompanied the Prime Minister during the tour. |
