A total of 37 schools have been completely destroyed in 13 districts, the Ministry of Education which has completed the initial assessment of the damage, said in a release yesterday. About 90 schools have been partially destroyed while about 25 schools in all affected districts need to be cleared of debris, and repairs and refurbishments are needed. According to Ministry of Education estimates, about 150 schools immediately need to be attended to for educational activities to begin. The Ministry has already started a comprehensive program of assessing the details of the damage per school, identifying land for re-location of schools within one km off the coastline and preparing plans for reconstruction immediately, together with the University of Moratuwa Engineering Faculty and all relevant construction companies in the State and private sectors. The State Engineering Corporation, CECB, National Construction, Contractors Association, Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation, are all involved in this exercise. Parallelly, a core group of donors consisting of the World Bank, ADB, Japan, GTZ, Swedish, SIDA, Plan International are also working very closely with the Ministry and engineers to initiate this process as early as possible. |
