Work at Colombo Port has been resumed and goes on smoothly. While the impact of the December 26 tsunami was minimal in respect of the Colombo Port, the Ports of Galle, Trincomalee, Kankasanthurai and Point Pedro were badly damaged. Sri Lanka Ports Authority sources said that except for Colombo, the other four ports have suffered heavy damage. "For the present we have stopped operations, until we carry out the necessary repairs after estimating the damage. We have already got the necessary reports in respect of the repairs needed for these ports. "We hope to expedite the repair work, and the Trincomalee Port will resume operations in a weeks time. "We are very positive that we would be in a position to bring them back to normal as early as possible", sources added. Sources also said that in Kankasanthurai goods are being transported via boats up to the port and the passenger transporting ships continue their normal operations. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has also set up a relief committee and information could be provided on Nos. 2451913,2451919 and 0777782298. For collection of funds the Establishment Branch of the Bank of Ceylon A/c No 190267 could be used. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has appointed Chief Engineer Gamini Chandrasekera to coast related areas of the North and East, Chief Engineer K. L. A. Kalupathirana to the Galle Port,the City and the suburbs, Director Norman Weeraratne for Matara and the suburbs, Chief Internal Auditor W. G. Vas for the Puttalam district and Managing Director W. G. Samaratunga to collect funds for relief work. Ports Authority Workers have volunteered to donate at the rate of Rs. 2,500 from the money allocated for the payment of increments announced by the 2005 Budget proposals of the government. |
