'Foreign troops will engage only in humanitarian activities'

by Rajmi Manatunge

Presidential Spokesman and Commissioner General of the Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation Ministry Harim Peiris said yesterday that foreign troops scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka will engage only in humanitarian activities.

Responding to a query by the media, Peiris said that although they were military personnel, the objective of their arrival was to assist the Government in its efforts in relief and rehabilitation.

"They are not coming here for military operations. It should be regarded as humanitarian assistance. The deployment will be done with co-ordination between the countries and the Centre for National Operations," he said.
