The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority in a press release on Friday announced that the public need not be panicky over the false rumour that following an outbreak of Avian flu among fouls in the Mahaweli Livestock Farm of Thunkama, several people were infected with the same disease by consuming the flesh of the diseased birds which were available in the open market. Denying this rumour as a total distortion, the Mahaweli Authority says that the disease "Avian Lucosis" which is commonly known as "Kurulu Una" is not contractable by human beings and that this disease is entirely different from the recent discovery of Influenza "B" virus which killed a few people around Ambilipitiya. The press release further stated that the Authority after research at the Peradeniya Livestock Products Research Institute has taken steps to check the spread of "Avian flu" with the assistance of the Livestock Resources and Agricultural Enterprises Company of the Mahaweli Authority. |
