Heartfelt condolences on sad occasion

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a condolence message to Dr. Manmohan Singh,

Prime Minister of India states:

"It is with much personal sadness that I have learnt of the passing away of Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister of India.

On my own behalf and on behalf of the Government and people of Sri Lanka please accept, Excellency, my heartfelt condolences on this sad occasion.

We also convey through you our deepest sympathies to the members of the late Leader's family.

Mr. Rao's contribution to the evolution of modern India began with his role in the struggle for Indian independence.

In the contemporary era, it is widely recognized that the spectacular success of the Indian economy today owes a great deal to the bold, decisive and visionary reforms initiated by P.V. Narasimha Rao.

As a scholar, linguist, poet and writer, the late Leader has brought to bear the wisdom of his rich background an experience on the progress that India has made under his leadership.

It is recalled that the Congress Party under the leadership of Prime Minister Rao contributed greatly to the initiation of an important era in bilateral relations between our two countries, both in economic and political terms.

The Government and people of Sri Lanka share the sadness at the loss of Mr. Narasimha Rao, together with the Government and people of India".
