Japan to send medical team

TOKYO, Sunday (AFP) - Japan said Sunday it would dispatch a group of medical personnel to Sri Lanka where more than 2,100 people were killed with many more missing after massive tsunami waves smashed into the island.

"We will send some 10 to 20 emergency medical experts as early as on Monday at the request of the Sri Lankan government," said a Japanese foreign ministry official.

Earlier Sunday, the biggest quake in 40 years struck off the coast of the northern Indonesian island of Sumatra, unleashing massive tidal waves across Asia that left over 4,000 people dead.

The quake, which measured 8.9 on the Richter scale according to the US Geological Survey, was the fifth strongest since the beginning of the 20th century.
