Several Naval bases damaged

The Navy was rearranging its positions in the North-East as tidal waves badly affected most of the Naval bases in the East and also in the South, Navy Spokesman Commodore Jayantha Perera told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the SLN Parakramabahu anchored at the Galle harbour hit by the tidal waves had been toppled, he added.

He said a Navy officer was reported missing and a sailor at Point Pedro was reported missing. "We are holding our positions in the East," he added.

The Naval base in Nilaweli has been completely damaged and washed away in the tidal waves and there was no confirmation about the Naval persons affected.

Naval Bases Dhakshina and Trincomalee have been damaged. But, there were no reports about the affected Naval persons.Army sources said Kalkudah Brigade Headquarters Colonel W.M.S. Gunaratne and his son were reportedly killed and more than 20 soldiers there were reported missing.

A battalion from Point Pedro and Manalkadu area in Jaffna were also reported missing.
