Tsunami affects several beach hotels

Several beach hotels along the coastal belt of the island have been affected by Tsunami waves, which hit Sri Lanka early yesterday killing thousands of people and displacing millions.

Although it was not certain how many local and foreign tourists were among the casualties it is reported that some of the hotels have been severely damaged.

The Chairman of the Tourist Board Udaya Nanayakkara with other top officials of the Board yesterday met representatives of all the hotel management companies to discuss the measures to be taken to lessen the impact of this unexpected disaster.

Some luxurious beach hotels in Trincomalee, down South and Negambo area have reported to be severely affected by Tsunami Waves.

Mani Sugathapala, Manager (Marketing) of Keels Hotel Management Services Ltd., told the Daily News that Coral Gardens - Hikkaduwa, Bentota Beach Hotel, and Beruwala Beach Hotel were among the affected hotels belong the company.

"Coral Gardens was the most affected. The first floor went totally under water and the electricity supply was disrupted. However, we took all the steps to ensure the safety of the guests," he said.

He said however, the Company's two hotels in the Maldives had not been affected by the tidal waves. He said the disaster would have only a temporary effect on the tourism industry of the country and there was no need to fear of any long term negative impact.

All the beach hotels belong to Tangerine Tours Ltd. were also affected, said a company spokesman. Among the hotels were Nilaveli Beach Hotel - Trincomalee, Tangerine Beach Hotel - Kalutara, Royal Palms Beach Hotel - Kalutara and Lihiniya Beach Hotel - Bentota. The telephone lines to most of these hotels were not functioning due to the damage caused by the tidal waves.
