India to help Nepal build military training school

KATHMANDU, Thursday (Xinhua) India will soon begin a massive project of constructing a military training school for the Royal Nepal Army to help Nepal fight against anti-government guerrillas, an army officer has said.

Fully funded by the Indian government, the project is expected to be completed at an expense of over 2 billion Nepali rupees (28. 57 million US dollars), The Himalayan Times newspaper on Thursday quoted the officer as saying.

"An initial study on its feasibility was carried out in March.

The Indian officials are, however, yet to inspect the proposed location at Saljhandi area in Rupandehi district (some 250 km southwest of Kathmandu)," the high-ranking officer said on condition of anonymity.

A delegation of the Indian army are expected to inspect the site within weeks, he noted, adding "India wants to strengthen the Royal Nepal Army to quell the rebels who are considered a threat to India, too."

Dubbed as the Integrated Army Training School, the institute will integrate the infantry, signals, engineers and education schools currently at various places in Kathmandu.

Along with the normal courses, the proposed school will also provide commando training, drivers' training and maintenance training, he added.
