Veteran shuttler Thiagan wins two golds Veteran sportsman Thiagan de Croos put up a fine performance to win two gold medals and a silver medal in badminton at the Pan Pacific Masters Games held at the Gold Coast in Australia recently. Sixty one year old Thiagan competing in the over 50's category tournament took the gold medal in the men's singles and mixed doubles and also won a silver medal in the men's doubles. Over five thousand competitors participated in 45 different sporting events at the Masters Games. Thiagan was a keen table tennis player and was the champion of the Public Services Club in Negombo and has been the vice president of the Mercantile Services Table Tennis Association. Thiagan has also won many events in snooker and his son Tavinne represented Sri Lanka in the World Junior Snooker tournament held in Bangalore India. Thiagan was also the vice president of the Sri Lanka Billiards and Snooker Association. Thiagan was also a keen soccer player and was the highest scoring right extreme in Colombo Schools when he represented St. Joseph's College senior football team in 1963. He also represented St. Joseph's first eleven hockey team. Thiagan also captained the college senior basketball team and was a member of the over 45 basketball team when he was 57 years old and which won a bronze medal at the Asia Pacific Masters Games in Australia in 2000. This was the first time that a Sri Lankan basketball team had won a medal in a major tournament. Thiagan's brother Dr. Anton de Croos was a top weightlifter and has represented the country in many international tournaments while his sister Dr. Mrs. Minoli Mirando is a dental surgeon and carries on a private practice in Sri Lanka and also works as a consultant for Sri Lankan Airlines. |
