Rs. 676 m set aside for road development, rehabilitation

The Colombo Municipal Council budget has allocated Rs. 676 million for road development and rehabilitation work in the Colombo Municipal Area. The road development and rehabilitation sector can expect considerable progress, Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardena told a media briefing yesterday.

He said the completion of work under the program for the development of the 100 feet wide Maligawatte Road in 2004 was a significant achievement.

"Arrangements have been made to complete the widening of a section of Bloemendhal Road in Colombo North and to widen Polhengoda Road. We also intend to pay attention to the daily maintenance work and to correct faults in street lamps and road signs," the Mayor said.

Dumping garbage has become a serious issue in the Colombo Municipal Area and the Bloemendhal garbage mountain is an accumulation of six to seven years. "We will take every possible step to clear it with Central Government assistance," The Mayor said.

Gunawardena said action will be taken next year to improve the efficiency of garbage disposal by the Municipal Council.

The Colombo Municipal Council has set goals to accord high priority to reduce the quantity of garbage further with the support of the people and workers given the achievement of reducing the volume of garbage from 780 tons to 620 during the last year.

He said Rs. 689 million has been allocated for garbage management services.

The Mayor said the sewerage system in Colombo is a serious threat to city dwellers every year and is often highlighted.

During the last two years, a big portion of the financial resources of the Municipal Council was used to improve the rainwater drainage system in the City, Gunawardena said.

"Hence the Colombo Municipal Council could bring down the sufferings of underprivileged people living in settlements where facilities are poor due to constant floods in 2004.

The Colombo Municipal Council intends to build the pumping station to commission the Sewerage System in Mattakkuliya delayed for years and expand the Sewerage System and complete the work of stage 1 of the Sewerage System in Kirulapona.

Rs. 359 million has been allocated for maintaining the Sewerage System in the Colombo Municipal area for 2005, the Mayor said.

He said Rs. 19 million has been allocated to provide a nutritious breakfast to students from 12 selected underprivileged schools identified within the City of Colombo. Rs. 259 million has been allocated for community health services and another Rs. 103 million for curative services while Rs 32 million has been allocated for Ayurveda Medical Service.

Rs. 259 million has been allocated to community health services for 2005 and Rs. 17 million for veterinary services while the Colombo Municipal Council budget has allocated Rs. 86 million for fire fighting services.

The amount allocated for sport facilities and entertainment is Rs 108 million.

The Mayor said the Colombo Municipal Council's expected total revenue is Rs. 3,990 million while the total estimated expenditure is Rs 3,989 million.
