Mushroom Development Program in NWP

The Business Development Centre in Kurunegala has planned to launch a "Mushroom Development Programme".

It is expected to provide services and facilities in technical, training and marketing to mushroom growers, seed producers, distributors and business development service providers engaged in providing services to producers of mushroom in Kurunegala, Puttalam and Kegalle districts.

The first phase of the program with a workshop was held recently at the Industrial Service Bureau (ISB) with the aim of identifying the needs of the mushroom growers.

R.D. Wimaladasa, Minister of Land and Agriculture of North Western Provincial Council was the chief guest. He agreed to provide all facilities through his ministry to develop this sector.

Mushroom cultivation is suitable project to promote self-employment. The main reason being the availability of a ready market due to its demand. The second reason being less capital is required and is possible with a small space of land, cheap material and labour.

The raw materials required are hay, paddy husk and saw dusts which are thrown away. Easy maintenance compared to the other businesses, enables to generate a stable income.
