Sri Lanka Pakistan FTA to be signed in January The Pakistan Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement is likely to be signed by the heads of state of the two countries in January, sources close to the move told the Daily News yesterday. Meanwhile a press release issued by the High Commission of Pakistan in Colombo stated that a meeting between the technical teams of Pakistan and Sri Lanka concluded in Colombo on Wednesday to finalise the agreement. Joint Secretary Ministry of Commerce Shahid Bashir led Pakistan delegation with five other officials including two representatives from High Commission of Pakistan in Colombo. Secretary Commerce Trade and Consumer Affairs S.Wirithamulla led the Sri Lankan team with representatives from Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, Export Development Board, Sri Lanka Tea Board, Ministry of Plantation Industry and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The talks were held in a cordial and conducive atmosphere with the two sides demonstrating positive and constructive approach. The two sides were able to address all outstanding matters, the sources said. It would be recalled that during the recent meetings of Prime Minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapkase, the leaders gave the political impetus to the process. The stressed the need for early conclusion of the FTA to further enhance bilateral trade to the mutual benefit of the two countries. Pakistan is the largest export market for Sri Lankan coconut products at present. |
