Upali excels at Veterans Games in Bangkok by R. M. Ratnayake, Kandy south spl. Upali Seneviratne, all round sportsman of Kegalle district won one gold medal and one silver medal at the 13th veterans Asian Games held in Bangkok, Thailand from 1st to 5th of December. The two events were 2,000 metres and the 4 x 400 relay. He is old boy of St. Anthony's College, Kandy, where he represented the college at the Central Province Athletic Group Meet and Public Schools Meet. He also represented St. Anthony's College Kandy at cricket, and soccer and for his excellent performances he was awarded College Colours for the three games. After leaving school he represented the Central Province Cricket Association in the Robert Senanayake Trophy tourney under Bertie Wijesinghe. He represented the Kegalle district at cricket, athletics and soccer and also captained the Kegalle District Cricket Association team, Kegalle Cricket Club, Sabaragamuwa Province Cricket Association and the Kegalle District athletic team. He was also a founder member of the Kegalle Cricket Club, Kegalle District Cricket Association, Sabaragamuwa Province Cricket Association and the Kegalle District Masters Athletic Club. Presently he is the President of the Kegalle Cricket Club, Vice President of Sri Lanka Masters Athletic Association, immediate past President of the Kegalle District Masters Athletic Association and the Secretary of the Sabaragamuwa Cricket Association. He also won two medals at the 12th Veterans Asian Games held in Bangalore, India in 2000. |
