'Milo' Sri Lanka junior golf c'ship by Richard Dwight The annual junior golf championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) and sponsored by 'Milo' for the third successive year, takes place from the 15th to the 17th December, at the Royal Colombo Golf Club. This year's tournament assumes a measure of importance to be significant, in that it breaks fresh ground, when for the first time there will be junior golfers from overseas - for a start the overseas golfers competing with the juniors here, will be from India. The Sri Lanka Junior Golf Championship which was initiated by Richard Pieris and Co has grown through the years to become increasingly popular with an increase in the number of participants. This championship was the breeding grounds for our talented golfers like Anura Rohana, Tissa Chandradasa, Lalith Kumara and yet others, who as Sri Lankan Junior Champions did well to win national amateur titles abroad too. Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara have progressed to move into the professional ranks and have made quite an impression in the Asian and Indian tours. It was gathered from the president and, the secretary of the SLGU, Dian Jayasuria and Priath Fernando respectively, that the juniors participate regularly in the junior championships of India, Pakistan, Singapore, with the hope of participating in the Quatar Junior Championship next year. The SLGU does also send two Juniors for the World Junior Championship in Scotland. Both Jayasuriya and Fernando said much more could be done for our Junior Golf Programme if we had more sponsors and was thankful to Air Shara for assistance rendered and to 'Milo' for sponsoring this tournament. There will be around 35 junior golfers inclusive of the Indians in the three-day championship, commencing on Wednesday 15. The participants must be under 18 years of age with the introduction of a competition for the under 15 which will be run concurrently. Mithum Perera who has won this championship for the past two years, will try to make it 3 in a row apart from the Indians he will have to give off his best against Binupa Wijesinghe, golfers Vijith Bandara and Chamil Wickremasinghe of Victory Golf Club and against Dinesh and Vinod Kumar from N'Eliya Golf Club. |
