Saman, Nirosha retain squash titles Nirosha Guruge of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya and Saman Tillekaratne retained the women's and men's open champions at the 24th National Squash Championship held at Tamil Union Squash Courts on Saturday. Tillekaratne and Samarasinghe had a hard fought battle in the finals but finally it was Tillekeratne who used his experience to triumph. Nirosha (15 years) beat her cousin sister Tehani Guruge from Musaeus in a 4-setter to win the women's final. James Finlays Ltd sponsored this tournament for the second year and its Chairman Dickie Juriansz was the chief guest. Results (all finals): Men's open: Saman Tillekeratne bt Navin Samarasinghe 9-10, 9-4, 8-10, 10-8, 9-5. Women's open: Nirosha Guruge bt Tehani Guruge 9-6, 9-5, 4-9, 9-3. Men's novices: Hiran Rajapakse bt R. Jayawardane 9-4, 9-8, 9-1. Masters over-35: R. S. Deen bt Rajiv Veerasuntharam 9-7, 9-5, 9-4. Men's plate (for 1st round losers): Nilruk Soysa bt Chaturanga Rajapakse 9-0, 9-6, 9-7. Mens Classic Plate (for the 2nd round losers): Manojith Weerasuriya bt Madupa Jayatilleka 9-4, 9-0, 9-4. Masters over-45: Oliver Guruge bt Lakdasa Cooray 9-1, 6-9, 9-5, 9-6. Mens open (3rd place): Eranga Amunugama bt Harin Perera 9-5, 9-1, 9-5. Women's open 3rd place: Randima Ranaweera bt Ashani Weerasinghe 9-6, 9-2, 9-2. |
