News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | PM holds talks with leaders in Myanmar Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who led the delegation which participated at the World Buddhist Congress which was attended by 34 countries held in Myanmar on Saturday, December 11. Mrs Rajapakse, and the Prime Ministers' Secretary Lalith Weeratunga accompanied the premier. The Prime Minister of Myanmar Lt. General Pochim and Mrs. Pochim warmly welcomed the delegation at the Rangoon air port on Saturday morning. A guard of honour was accorded by the Burmese forces in honour of the Prime Minister and the delegation. Premier Rajapakse later met Myanmar Parliament Senior Chief of Forces Thansen for talks. Prime Minister Rajapakse also met Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and several senior Ministers of the Myanmar Parliament. Special attention was given during the discussion the Prime Minister held with them to start a direct air links between Sri Lanka and Myanmar in order to improve ties between Buddhists of both countries, and to organise tours to Buddhagaya, the Temple of the Tooth Relic and such other places of religious of worship. The delegations discussed the possibilities of buying precious stones and importing satinwood furniture which is found in plenty in Myanmar. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse delivering the concluding speech said that the aim of the congress was to spread Theravada Buddhism all over the world and to enlighten people with a vast knowledge. He said people of many countries today were intimidated by fear of wars and they are mentally frustrated. The solution for this is clearly found in Buddhism through which the world population can attain mental solace. He thanked the Prime Minister and the People of Myanmar for rendering an invaluable service to hold this Buddhist Summit. |
