Speaking in Parliament on March 3, 2000 and referring to the allegations of contempt of court against then Minister S. B. Dissanayake, Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe was reprimanding the Government.

He said in Malaysia, MPs have been jailed for lesser offences against the judiciary and in Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's time, a minister had to resign his post following defamatory remarks about the Attorney-General of Scotland.
