Desecrating Parliament to subvert democracy

UNP trying to resume campaign of terror to destabilize country - President

from Ranil Wijayapala in Matara

Addressing a public rally at the Sanath Jayasuriya Stadium in Matara on the final day of "Nilwala Harasara" to mark her 10 years in office, the President noted that the UNP was attempting to change a correct and independent judgement delivered by the Supreme Court via Parliament.

She condemned the manner the UNP conducted itself within Parliament during the past few days observing that the UNP was trying to desecrate the august assembly by such antics.

President Kumaratunga said Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was manipulating his MPs from his room in the Parliament. She said Parliament which was restored to its due dignity in 1994 under the PA Government has today descended to a den of scoundrels due to the conduct of the UNP.

Noting that Prof. G. L. Peiris had taken the lead to change the Supreme Court decision in Parliament the President warned Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that the Government will be compelled to control the UNP MPs if he was unable to do so.

The President also observed that the UNP had now taken the role of the LTTE to explode bombs in the south to create a climate of terror as they had failed in their attempts to get Prabhakaran to explode bombs in the South.

She charged that a UNP MP from Kotte was behind the grenade attack at the musical show featuring Indian artistes in Colombo. The President said that the UNP was engaging in such acts since it realises it cannot come to power through democratic means.

Although she was totally against the vision of certain UNP politicians she had invited them to work together for the past 10 years for the betterment of the country forgetting political differences.

"However, all my attempts to get them on board failed during the last ten years", she added.

"The UPFA as a Government have shed all ethnic and religious differences and worked together as a unit. The only difference we have left to shed is our political diversities."

She appealed to all political leaders to join her at least individually if they cannot come along with their parties to work together to take the country forward.

"We should unite shedding all differences to work under one vision and create a unique programme to take the country forward at this juncture", she added. A large number of Government Ministers including the Chief Organiser of the Nilwala Harasara programme Ports, Aviation, Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera addressed the rally.
