Hampshire Senior cricketers on tour The Hampshire Cricket Board Seniors team's tour of Sri Lanka from next month is expected to provide opportunities for our national cricketers to play in the English counties and leagues in the near future. The lack of opportunities to break into the English circuit was lamented by national captain Marvan Atapattu in a BBC interview during the ICC Champions trophy tournament in England in September. Presently only champion off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has been offered a contract to play for Lancashire next season. Top ranking administrators of Hampshire Seniors CB who have close connections with their counterparts from other counties are expected to meet with Sri Lanka Cricket officials during the tour to explore ways and means of getting Sri Lankan players to play in the counties and leagues in England. In this aspect Hampshire Board Senior Cricket XI president John Rickard, coach of Hampshire cricket Alan Wright and CEO Mark Newton who will accompany the team will use their good offices to pursue the matter after talks with SLC officials. Apart from providing the Hampshire Seniors the opportunity to explore the country, the tour is also being made use of to cultivate long-standing relationships which should help Sri Lanka cricket in the future. The Hampshire Seniors tour to Sri Lanka was initiated by Errol Seneviratne Sports Tours with the blessings of SLC. Seneviratne, a former international umpire has in the past brought to Sri Lanka several cricket teams from the UK among them MCC Youths, Kent Seniors, Royal Air Force and Sussex under 19. The Hampshire Seniors (over 40s) will bring along with them a contingent of 30 of which 16 comprises players and the others wives and officials. |
