Craft based industry to be promoted internationally

by Irangika Range

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) will embark on an ambitious program "Crossing Horizons" to promote the local craft based industry in the international market.

The program will focus on showcasing the imagination, creativity and capability of local craftsmen beyond geographical boundaries. In this regard the EDB will conduct an export-oriented program from January 19 to 20, 2005 at the BMICH.

The EDB's Director of the Product Management Division, Indira Malwatta said that the objective of this program is to identify the most creative and skilled SME manufacturers having an export potential. The program will also unveil their talents and capabilities, providing them with assistance in terms of technology, design and market development and matchmaking between selected SMEs and Link-Exporter companies on mutually beneficial business links.

Malwatta said that the program would comprise four main phases. "The first phase is the displaying of products of fifty selected SME companies, who engage in the production of craft based giftware items, ornamental ware items, utility ware items made out of ceramic, wood metal paper, natural material and jewellery in the country.

The EDB will select the best 50 companies by holding interviews according to their creativity, originality and exportability of commercial products. Our target is not only to display fifty SME products at the exhibition, but also to encourage and motivate them for the export market by developing innovative ideas," Malwatta said.

"A final round of the EDB's Sri Lanka Export Design Awards 2004 will be conducted at the exhibition. Eighty winners have been already selected from 800 SME companies under the seven categories such as jewellery, giftware, footwear, apparel, handloom, toys and wood based products for the final round.

The products of these eighty winners' will be displayed at the exhibition and the best companies will be selected. The EDB will present gold, silver, bronze awards and two merit certificates for winners," she said.

The Assistant Director of the EDB, Madhawa Waidyaratna said there will be a display by ten established SME companies at the exhibition targeting to diversify and outsource products.
