Yes, it is a bit of good news for Sri Lankan English creative writers. Last week British Council, Sri Lanka launched a new project promoting original English writing. Joining hands with two other English creative writing groups, Wadiya Group and English Writers' Cooperative British Council launched a website for writers, WriteClique.net. The launch took place amidst a sizeable gathering of both young and old creative writers, readers and many enthusiasts. The creators of the site are a youthful group headed by Delon Amarasinghe. He presented a detailed introduction of the site responding to the many questions from the floor. The Director, British Council Tony O'Brian too joined in with Delon supplementing with many more details, on the new site, being very careful not to use many website jargon. Nihal de Silva, the author of the Gracian Award winning novel The Road from Elephant Pass, who already owns a page in the web recited a few excerpts of his book. The first writer to the WriteClique.net Sandra Fernando read out her poem 'Red' which is the very first piece of writing to appear in the Web. The youngest writer to the site so far is Sheshadri Kottearachchi. She too recited her little short story to the audience. WriteClique.net is basically a site where anyone can submit his or her own writing, poems, short stories, prose, plays etc. Each writer will have his/her own personal page on the site which will contain a list of their as well as details about the writer and contact information. The site features advanced data bases on the net that will let the user search for writing based on the writer's name, title, category, genre, age and keyword. Writers' Groups too can have their own page in the site. On this page they can have their news about activities, meetings or any other writing related projects they plan. WriteClique.net will also feature news of events, competitions and other subjects of interest to the writers. Pix: Sudath Nishantha **** Back **** |
