LTTE compels troops close entry, exit points

The absence of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) officials at Uyilankulam and Omanthai Entry/Exit points, compelled Security Forces and the Police to close Entry and Exit points for traffic yesterday morning after information was received that the LTTE was planning to provoke Security Forces using mobs, the Military Spokesman states in a press release.

The decision to close the two Entry/Exit points was necessitated after information was received that the LTTE was forcing civilians in Vavuniya and Mannar areas to move into Vavuniya and Mannar towns en masse for an LTTE organised Hartal campaign over alleged harassments, said to have been caused by Security Forces during their recent commemorative week.

The LTTE in apparent moves to mobilise hundreds of government officials, businessmen and civilians en masse has threatened them saying that they should proceed to Vavuniya and Mannar town areas today (2) in order to join an LTTE Hartal.

The Security Forces as usual were waiting to open those Entry/Exit points but ICRC officials, citing security reasons, did not however show up for duty this morning after information was received to the effect that an orchestrated move by LTTE, meant to disrupt normalcy and discredit the Security Forces, was on today (2) by mobilising mobs.

This sudden move by LTTE men on Thursday (2) caused enormous inconvenience to thousands of civilians, including a large number of patients who generally use both Entry/Exit points for various purposes when they showed up at Muhamalai, Uyilankulam and Omanthai checkpoints.

An average of 10,000-15,000 civilians and a total of about 800 vehicles daily use both Omanthai and Uyilankulam Entry/Exit points.

Similarly the Muhamalai Entry/Exit point is used daily by about 10,000 civilians and 1,000 vehicles on average.

Those Entry/Exit points will remain open as usual immediately after normalcy is returned to the area.

All security measures to maintain law and order in affected areas have been taken by the Police with the assistance of the Security Forces.
