Major General Asoka Jayewardene is the new Secretary to the Ministry of Defence. His appointment took effect from December 1. Major General Jayewardene was the North-East Province Governor before this appointment, states a Presidential Secretariat press release.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga made this appointment under the powers vested in her under Article 52 (1) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

The post fell vacant after the President acceded to the request of Cyril Herath, the former Secretary, that he be relieved of his duties.
