News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | At adjournment: Govt will do utmost to secure Dinesh's release: Mangala The Government will make its utmost efforts to secure the release of Dinesh Rajaratnam taken hostage by militant group in Iraq on October 19, Information and Media Minister and Government Spokesman Mangala Samaraweera said in Parliament yesterday. The Minister was replying to an adjournment motion moved by UNP Colombo district MP T. Maheshwaran urging the Government to secure Rajaratnam's release. In his reply, the Minister said: "The Foreign Ministry has taken a series of steps to secure the release of Rajaratnam from the date it was informed of this incident. Foreign Ministry officials through the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait is doing its best to make contact with the militant group. The Ministry has taken steps to look after Rajaratnam's family in Sri Lanka and to get an allowance from the Al Jazeem Company for the family members. The Ministry has also formed a Task Force to secure the release of Rajaratnam. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga during her recent visit to Theran has taken up this with relevant authorities. Earlier Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse also took up this issue while Deputy Foreign Minister Prof. Visva Warnapala made an appeal through Al Jazeera for the release of Rajaratnam. The Ministry has also taken steps to record an appeal from Rajaratnam's family members to the militant group to be telecast over Al Jazeera. |
