UNP MP indicted for bribery

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption indicted Puttalam District UNP Parliamentarian R. B. Palitha Rangei Bandara in connection with accepting a bribe while he was Officer in Charge of the Wellawa Police between January and December 1999.

Indictment was filed before the Colombo High Court yesterday.

The MP was indicted on two counts, first for demanding a consideration of several chairs and thereafter accepting Rs. 10,000 in lieu from A. M. Somaratne of Wellawa between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 1999.

A. M. Somaratne, a farmer in his statement said he was the treasurer of Wellawa Dolukanda Rankoth Lena Aranya Senasanaya Trust Fund. When he went to the Wellawa Police to attend to a task connected to the Trust Fund, the OIC demanded some chairs.

He gave him Rs. 10,000 in lieu, out of his own funds as that of the Chairman of the Trust Fund. There are seven witnesses listed to give evidence and four productions.
