Whip informs Speaker: UNP's Maheshwaran blackballed by Govt. for vilifying President by Pramod de Silva and Ranil Wijayapala Chief Government Whip and Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle informed Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, that as the government group they will not answer any of the questions raised by UNP Colombo District MP T. Maheshwaran in the future. Minister Fernandopulle said the government group took this decision as they no longer tolerate the way in which Maheshwaran was attacking President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and the Bandaranaike family. "Maheshwaran recently began to vilify President Kumaratunga and the Bandaranaike family in Parliament even disregarding the Standing Orders of the House. We cannot allow this to continue further," Fernandopulle added. Maheshwaran during the committee stage budget debate on the vote on Ports and Aviation continuously talked about the conduct of the President disregarding the instructions from the Chair to adhere to the standing orders. There were disturbances in the House as Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Deputy Minister Dilan Perera and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena urged the Speaker not to allow Maheshwaran to continue his speech violating the Standing Orders. The Government MPs including Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Deputy Minister Dilan Perera and Mervyn Silva came to the well of the House in protest of Maheshwaran's conduct. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara gave a ruling that the sections of the Maheshwaran's speech not in accordance with the Standing Orders should not be included in the Hansard report. |
