Lankan presentation at MADI Travel Market a success

The Sri Lanka Stand at the MADI Travel and Tourism fair

Sri Lanka's representation at MADI Travel Market 2004 - an international travel and tourism fair has assisted to explore new business avenues and create tourism ties with other foreign countries including Central and Eastern Europe, Suhashinie A. Gamage, Management Assistant who handles the Prague Market at the Ceylon Tourist Board (SLTB) told the "Daily News".

The fair was held in Prague, Czech Republic from November 3 to 5. MADI travel market is considered as a key event not only in Prague but also in Central Eastern Europe. It also provides opportunities for exhibitors to develop, renew contacts and to explore new business ventures.

This year MADI travel market received more than 500 exhibitors from over 30 countries and they represented every sector of the tourism industry including national and regional tourism organisations, tour operations, travel agencies, hotels, publications, insurance companies, suppliers for the tourism companies and travel technology providers.

Sri Lanka was registered with MADI for the second time and the SLTB participated together with several reputed local travel agencies and hoteliers including Jetwing, Aitken Spence, Exotic Vacations, Quickshaws, Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts and Mahaweli Reach hotel.

According to the SLTB sources, Sri Lankan stand was better than ever, especially in terms of design, decor and outlook. The decor highlighting all tourism attractions in Sri Lanka warmly welcomed the visitors and gave them an insight of perfectly blended culture and heritage of the country.

"All the co-exhibitors at the Sri Lankan stand who represented Sri Lanka tourism industry were highly impressed over the overall arrangements of MADI 2004 and throughout the fair they succeeded in strengthening the existing businesses and establishing new business contacts", she said.

"They also emphasised that the number and quality of the business contacts had improved this year. The visitors also showed keen interest in Sri Lanka as a tourist destination and their response was extremely positive. The positive progress achieved by Sri Lanka at MADI confirmed its position as an important marketing instrument for the local tourism industry", SLTB sources further said.

The tea service at Sri Lankan stand during the fair was a major tourist attraction as Sri Lanka is famous for its tea in Czech Republic.

"We were able to organise the tea service at Sri Lankan stand with the courtesy of Sri Lanka Tea Board Office in Warsaw. Give away tea packs were also distributed to those who visited Sri Lankan stand", she added.

Ceylinco Travels & Tours Ltd, re-opened their branch at the premises of Seylan Bank in the heart of Negombo, by Chairman Ceylinco Consolidated, Dr. Lalith Kotelawala, recently.

This is in keeping with the expansion program of Ceylinco Travels & Tours where passengers in Negombo area now have accessibility to do their transactions in one place and close to their homes.

This branch is also fully equipped with computerised reservations and will also issue travellers cheques and attend to hotel reservations in addition to the ticketing requirements.

Associated at the opening was the Director/General Manager of Ceylinco Travels & Tours, Nilan Krisnaratne along with his team and Tissa Nanayakkara, Director, Ceylinco Travels & Tours, Sarath Kumarasiri, Manager, Seylan Bank, Negombo Branch, the Mayor of Negombo and leading businessmen in the area.

Deshamanya Dr. Kotelawala, in his speech emphasized the importance to combine the travel desk along with the bank in keeping with one stop facility for prospective travellers who could attend to their banking needs as well as overseas travel requirements when travelling abroad.

He also informed that Ceylinco Travels & Tours are looking into the possibility of opening branches islandwide in all offices of Seylan Bank.

This will further enhance Sri Lankan travellers to get to their nearest friendly Seylan Bank branch and handle their travel formalities with Ceylinco Travels & Tours. They could transact Air-ticketing, facilitate hotel reservations and even purchase travellers cheques at any of the branches.
