100,000 self employment jobs for rural youth - Jeevan Kumaratunga

A total of 100,000 self employment opportunities would be generated next year to get the rural youth actively involved in Sri Lanka's new economic drive, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Jeevan Kumaratunga told at a news conference yesterday.

As a pilot project, the Ministry of Youth Affairs has launched a program to market fish, providing self employment to many urban and rural youth. "This is just one program we have launched.

We do not want those youth to be just fishmongers.

They would market fish in a better way, giving a better deal to both the consumers and fishermen," he said.

He said each youth would be allocated around 1,000 families to cater to. "In time to come, they would market vegetables, rice and other commodities as well. Since there will be no middlemen, they could offer competitive but reasonable prices, while giving a better deal to farmers as well," he said.

Minister Kumaratunga said youths account for more than 30% of our country's population and the UPFA Government is keen to fulfil their aspirations.

Among the other areas on which the Ministry concentrate on are to obtain maximum youth contribution in national development drive, education on social values, better training facilities to youth, cultural and education development among youths and get them actively involved in the development process.
