Anura Gankanda creates history

by Anjana Gamage

A Sri Lankan candidate, Anura Heenilame Gankanda created history and brought glory to his Motherland by grabbing the World Prize for Business Communication at the recently concluded ABE (U.K.) Examination conducted by the Association of Business Executives, United Kingdom.

This is the first time in Sri Lanka's and ABE's history that the World Prize for Business Communication (BC) in the English medium was won by a Sri Lankan student. Over 22,000 candidates from 15 countries sat the examination and Anura beat them all to win first place and grabbed the world prize.

His Business Communications instructor was Sisira Wijesingha, well-known media man who is the Media Advisor to the Sri Lanka Army and a visiting lecturer of Oxford College of Business in Colombo 3.

Both, world prize winner Anura and his mentor Sisira were felicitated and awarded with special awards yesterday at a function held at the Holiday Inn.

ABE Assistant Chief Executive Officer in U.K. Christine Gill who participated as a special guest at the event said that last year too the three top places were won by three Sri Lankan students and these achievements testified the quality of the ABE education at the Oxford College of Business.

"There is nothing to equal the pleasure enjoyed by a teacher when his pupil wins laurels. No other can achieve that much pleasure and therefore, this special achievement would be a honour to all mentors in this country", said Sisira Wijesingha, the master behind the success of Anura's world prize.

He also pointed out that there is no limit to one's learning ability and therefore coming from educational institutions whether government or private is a clear sign of a establishing a learned society as well.

World prize winner Anura Gankanda said that although he won the world prize, all his achievements are due to the dedication and commitment of the lecturers of the Oxford College of Business as well.

Managing Director of Oxford College of Business in Colombo, Upul Daranagama and ABE lecturer T. M. Jayasekara also spoke.
