by Florence Wickramage The Headquarters Flying Squad of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) on Saturday conducted several raids at the Tabbowa Sanctuary and its environs. In two raids the Flying Squad seized two lorries one containing a load of illegally felled timber and the other in the process of being loaded with sand and rock illicitly mined from the Tabbowa Sanctuary. The seized timber included Palu, Thammanna and Turpentine. In the first instance one suspect was taken into custody and was produced before the Puttalam Magistrate. The suspect was released on Rs. 2000 cash bail and Rs. 50,000 personal bail. In the second instance the Flying squad took into custody two suspects and seized mining equipment consisting mammoties, baskets etc. The suspects were produced before the Puttalam Magistrate and were fined and released on personal bail. In another raid at a place close to the Tabbowa Sanctuary, the Flying Squad seized 10 kilograms of dry venison and one deep freezer and took one suspect into custody. On being produced before the Puttalam Magistrate, the suspect was released on a cash bail of Rs. 10,000 and personal bail of Rs. 5000. The above raids were led by Wildlife Ranger M. Faiz, Wildlife Guards Kamal Lalith Peiris, Lalith Wijithananda and Asela Ranjith. |
