by Florence Wickramage The Urban Development and Water Supply Ministry has introduced alternative water supply projects to provide pure drinking water to the Urban areas. Priority among them is the Gami Diyawara Project and the Rainwater Harvesting Project which has gained momentum in the rural areas, official sources said. Under the Gami Diyawara Project shallow wells are being constructed whereby pure drinking water is made avaialble for the village folk. Under the same project, the digging of deep wells harnessing traditional knowledge has also become a success. The Ministry also introduced sinking deep wells in the lower areas of river banks which ensures a regular water supply even during drought seasons. Official sources added that during the last drought season as much as 467,675 families were affected due to lack of water for drinking purposes and for irrigation. With the Gami Diyawara and Rainwater Harvesting Projects, farmers are now supplied with a regular supply of water for their activities. |
