by Sandasen Marasinghe Dr. Lalitha Piyarisi of Asiri Hospitals who is alleged to have misdiagnosed a patient Irangani Perera as a victim of breast cancer and removed both her breasts as a result, filed answers before the Colombo District Court refuting the allegations against him. He claimed the fact that Irangani Perera was a cancer patient, was proved through several medical tests before and after removal of her breasts. Dr. Piyarisi stated that although petitioner claimed that subsequent test on her removed body parts showed no signs of cancer the reports of the examination carried out at the CNH on the specimen removed from her revealed that the petitioner was a cancer patient. This was confirmed by the consultant pathologist attached to Sri Jayawardanapura Hospital, Dr Piyarisi said. He further said that even before the operation she was examined by Dr. Ruchira Fernando of CNH and was diagnosed as a victim of breast cancer. Dr. Piyarisi in his answer filed before the Colombo District Court denied allegations against him and counter sued in a sum of Rs. 7.5 million as damages for the loss of reputation through the allegation without just and reasonable grounds. The petitioner in this case, Irangani Perera filed her petition claiming that Dr. Piyarisi was negligent in diagnosing her illness and sued him for Rs. 3 million as damages. |
