Iraq-bound Sri Lankan group turned away at airport

Dec. 01, Colombo (Colombo News Page) Airport officials at Katunayake have turned away a group of 24 Sri Lankan men who were scheduled to leave for employment in Iraq under the guise of tourists going to Jordan. Airport officials said the young men were scheduled to leave on Saturday and the destination printed on their passports was Baghdad.

They did not have a return ticket or Jordanian visas, the officials said. The men had each paid Rs. 55,000 to a job agency for the opportunity. The Sri Lankan authorities prohibited them from seeking employment in Iraq.

Currently, a Sri Lankan truck driver, Dinesh Rajaratnam, is being held hostage by Iraqi militants.
