Unemployed Graduates to receive postings from January 1

by Manjula Fernando

The unemployed graduates who received training under the Government's graduate employment scheme will be posted to the Institutions under the provincial and line ministries from January 1, a spokesman for the Finance Ministry said yesterday. Thus a total of 41,305 graduates who were selected for public sector jobs will receive their postings in January, he said.

The Deputy Treasury Secretary has directed all institutions to short list their vacancies and ensure fruitful employment of these graduates.

The spokesman said the pre-job training for the unemployed graduates selected from the 'appeals list' will start by mid-December.

This 'appeals list' was prepared in order to allow graduates who were not selected in the initial stage an opportunity to prove their eligibility for public sector jobs under this scheme.

The Ministry received over 5000 appeals, after closing selections for jobs under the scheme in August. Despite Government assessments that there were about 30,000 jobless graduates in the country, over 50,000 applications were received when the call was made in June.

"The response was tremendous and in order to ensure jobs to all unemployed graduates, we decided to open the stage for appeals," he said.

Of them a total of 41,305 were selected for training under the graduate employment scheme in two batches, the first batch of 17,000 in August and another 24,000 in October.

"Already the first batch has completed their three-month training program at special centres at district level and is awaiting absorption and the second batch is half way into their training," the spokesman said. Graduates who failed to submit their degree certificates or experienced other shortcomings at the first interview have made it this time. The number of graduates selected from the appeals list is yet to be announced.

"Their three-month pre-job training will begin by the second week of this month," he said.
